Maintenant que la bibliothèque est en marche, que l’on commence à connaitre les enfants les plus réguliers, il est temps pour Sylvain de créer une animation d’une autre envergure : la création d’un livre par et pour les enfants. La première étape est d’organiser tout ça ! Choisir une histoire de départ pour donner un cadre aux enfants, puis savoir comment s’en détacher pour laisser libre cours à leur imaginaire, choisir comment l’illustrer, quelles techniques utiliser, etc. Enfin penser toute la conception de A à Z. Et qui dit conception dit aussi intervenant ! Eh oui ! Pour une animation digne de ce nom, l’idéal est d’échanger avec des gens du cru, les rattacher au projet pour leur faire partager leurs connaissances. On fait donc la tournée de la ville pour aller à la rencontre de quelqu’un prêt à nous aider à illustrer notre livre. Et nous trouvons notre salut en la belle personne d’Elizabeth, qui accepte de consacrer un peu de son temps pour faire un atelier de peinture, pour la couverture du livre.

Il manque une dernière chose avant de pouvoir commencer, et pas la moindre : des enfants.
Et pas n’importe lesquels : des enfants assidus, car là est toute la difficulté de ce projet : il demande régularité et ponctualité (deux notions qui, il faut l’avouer, ne sont pas les points forts d’ici).
Il faut d’abord créer notre propre histoire : le choix se porte sur un tapis à histoire, le conte du roi et de la bague. On raconte le début de l’histoire, mais tout à coup …… trou de mémoire ! Que se passe-t-il après ? C’est là que les enfants interviennent ! Aidés pas des dés à histoire dont les faces représentent différents éléments prédéfinis de l’histoire (lieux et personnages) , les enfants inventent la suite des péripéties du héros, où va-t-il, qui rencontre-t-il, et surtout que se passe-t-il ? Même si leur timidité les bloque un peu au début et donne à l’histoire un côté un peu redondant, au fur et à mesure que les minutes passent, les langues se délient et le conte devient de plus en plus farfelu !

Une fois l’histoire établie, les illustrations se font au fil des séances. Avec une technique différente pour chaque lieu visité, les enfants découvrent de nouvelles manières de dessiner. Imaginez leur tête quand on leur donne une fourchette pour graver dans la peinture, ou uniquement une paire de ciseaux, de la colle et du papier !
Et voilà tous les ingrédients sont là pour faire le plus beau des livres !
Le principal problème rencontré, comme on s’y attendait, concerne la régularité des enfants. Il est en effet très rare d’avoir les douze enfants en même temps. Il faut donc rattraper le retard de certains, souvent sur le temps d’ouverture de la bibliothèque, devant même parfois aller les chercher chez eux .
En revanche cela permet de se rendre compte de certaines réalités. Par exemple, quand nous leur demandons de prendre en photo ce qui fait la particularité de leur quartier, nous n’avons pas la même vision : nous voyons le linge coloré qui pend, les bicoques faites de tôles, les grands masques qui décorent la maison d’à côté, eux voient leur école, le tas de sable sur lequel ils jouent, le magasin du coin, leur voiture, etc. De même, pour les illustrations, ils se détachent au fil des séances de l’imitation de modèle et libèrent leur imaginaire : on voit alors apparaitre sous leurs crayons, pinceaux et fourchette leur propre vision du lieu, souvent plus coloré, plus vivant.
Le fait de mener le projet avec le même groupe d’enfants apporte une autre dimension à l’expérience. Ainsi, à la fin du projet quand on voit que ceux qui ne se connaissaient pas au début lisent et trainent ensemble, on se dit qu’on a gagné, quand le plus timide chantonne à haute voix sans complexe, on se dit qu’on a gagné, quand les plus grands vont spontanément aider les plus jeunes, on se dit qu’on a gagné. Parce qu’avant la création d’un livre, l’objectif ici était de créer des liens, faciliter les échanges et apprendre les uns des autres. Après tout, c’est pour ça que la bibliothèque existe !

Now that the library is running and that we begin to know the most regular children, it is time for Sylvain to create an animation of a different scope: the creation of a book by and for children. The first step is to organize all that! One must choose the beginning of a story for giving a frame to the children and then to know how to break away to give free rein to their imagination, one must choose how to illustrate it, and what techniques to use, etc. Finally to think the whole conception from A to Z. And who says conception says also intervening party! Eh Yes ! For an animation worthy of the name, it is best to exchange with local people, try to connect them to the project in order for them to share their knowledge. So we toured the city to go to meet someone willing to help us to illustrating our book. And we found our salvation in the beautiful person of Elizabeth, who agrees to dedicate some of her time to make a paint workshop for the book cover.Missing one last thing before starting, and not the least: children.And not just anyone: but some persevering children, because here is the difficulty of this project: it requires regularity and punctuality (two concepts which, admittedly, are not the highlights here).We must first create our own story: the choice is a carpet story, the tale of the king and the ring. We narrate the beginning of the story, but suddenly ...... memory hole! What is going to happen after? It is from there that the children are intervening! Helped by story dices whose faces are predefined elements of the story (characters and places), children invent the rest of the adventures of the hero : where he goes, who he meets, especially what is going on? Although shyness blocks a bit at first and gives the story a bit redundant, as and when the minutes go on, children start to speak and the story becomes increasingly wacky!

Once the story established, the illustrations are make as the sessions go by. With a different technique for each place visited, the children discover new ways to drawing. Imagine their face when one give them a fork to engrave in the paint, or just a pair of scissors, glue and paper!And here are all the ingredients to make the most beautiful books!The main problem, as expected, concerned the regularity of children. It is indeed very rare to have twelve children together. So you must catch up for their delay, often at the time of opening of the library, being sometimes obliged to pick them up at home.However this allow to being aware of certain realities. For example, when we ask them to photograph what is special about their neighbourhood, we do not have the same vision: we see the colorful clothes hanging, the shacks made of sheet metal, large masks that decorate the house next door, they see their school, the pile of sand on which they play, the corner store, the car, etc. Similarly, for the illustrations, as and when the sessions go on, they break away from imitating a model and they release their imagination: then we see appearing from their pencils, brushes and fork their own vision of the place, often more colourful, more alive.The fact to lead the project with the same group of children adds another dimension to the experience. Thus, at the end of the project when we see that those who did not know themselves each other, start reading and hanging out together, we say we won, when the more shy children hum loudly without complex, we say we won, when the elders spontaneously help the youngers, we say we won. Because before the creation of a book, the goal here was to create links, to facilitate exchanges and learn from each other. After all, that's why the library exists!
